It’s critically important to frequently check the gearcase on your drive and prop shafts for water intrusion. If water has gotten inside, it most likely means there is a degraded seal (or seals) that will need to be replaced. Most people check for water when changing out the gear oil. They will drain the oil, check for water, and then replace the oil.

But testing for water in this way means you may not discover a leaking seal until after it’s already causing problems. In extreme cases, this can cost you a boatload of money, especially if you don’t catch the water intrusion in time.

So we recommend using this pressure/vacuum tester that allows you to test the performance of the gear case seals more easily. By doing this, you’ll be able to detect the problem before symptoms of the problem present.

Gearcase Pressure/Vacuum Tester Features

Each gearcase seal actually contains two separate seals. The inner seal works to keep the oil inside the gear case, and the outer seal keeps the water out. With this tester, you can test with both vacuum and pressure to check each seal for degradation without changing out the oil entirely — and before too much water has a chance to get in.

This tester is a combination unit so that you can do both pressure and vacuum testing with one unit. While using the tester, simply flip the valve on the side of the unit to change from vacuum to pressure and back.

The unit fits most Chrysler, Evinrude, Force, Johnson, Mariner, and Mercury outboards. Our set also includes adapters to fit Suzuki, Tohatsu, and Yamaha lower units.
