The Clean Up: Upgrading to a JABSCO Washdown Pump
We replace a rusted-out 2004 Shurflo pump with a new Jabsco unit. It wasn't as simple as a swap—watch us troubleshoot plumbing adapters and clogged lines.
Overcoming Installation Hurdles
The original Shurflo pump was in such bad shape that the motor literally fell off the mounting bracket due to rust. We chose a Jabsco HotShot series pump as the replacement, but ran into a few issues during install:
1. The Adapter Mismatch
The boat was plumbed with 5/8" hose, but the new Jabsco pump only included 1/2" and 3/4" quick-connect fittings. This is a common frustration in marine plumbing. We had to source a specific brass 5/8" to garden hose adapter to make the connection work without replacing the entire hose run.
2. The Rust Clog
After getting everything hooked up, the pump would only produce a trickle. We disconnected the line and found it packed with rust flakes from the old pump. We had to back-flush the system using a garden hose and shop air to blow the debris back out into the bilge.
3. Hardware Failure
During our final pressure test, a hose blasted off the fitting. The culprit? A "stainless" hose clamp that used a cheap, non-stainless screw which had rusted through. We replaced all clamps with high-quality, 100% stainless steel marine clamps to ensure the system holds pressure.
