Smooth Shifting: Disassembling the Yamaha 704 Binnacle
Stiff controls can make docking a nightmare. We disassemble, clean, and grease the Yamaha 704 Twin Binnacle control box to restore that "like-new" feel.
The Problem: Stiff & Sticky Controls
The Yamaha 704 control box is the interface between you and your engines. Over time, the factory grease dries out and turns into a glue-like substance. On our boat, shifting into neutral was a guessing game—you had to slam it past the detent, often accidentally going into reverse.
The Teardown Process
We removed the binnacle from the console and performed a complete bench teardown.
- Disassembly: We carefully removed the shift and throttle levers, taking note of the position of the friction adjustment screws.
- Cleaning: Using solvent, we scrubbed away the old, hardened grease from the sliding plates and cam mechanisms.
- The Neutral Safety Switch: We inspected this critical switch, which prevents the engine from starting in gear. Corrosion here is a common cause of "no-crank" issues.
- Regreasing: We applied fresh, high-quality marine grease to all contact points.
The Result
After reassembly, the difference was night and day. The "clunk" into gear was crisp, and we could find neutral effortlessly. This maintenance is often overlooked but is crucial for safe close-quarters maneuvering.
