How to Remove Seized Yamaha Trim & Tilt Caps (Without Destruction)
The Problem
Soft aluminum caps seize to the steel housing. Using a hammer and punch wallows out the holes, leading to a $500+ repair bill for a new housing.
The Solution
Precise heat application, maximum leverage, and high-strength MTT Pin Wrenches ensure removal without damaging the component.

Tools Required
- Marine Tech Tools Pin Wrench: Use AMT0006 or AMT0009.
- Propane or MAP Gas Torch: Essential for thermal expansion.
- 1/2" Drive Breaker Bar: Necessary for leverage.
- Penetrating Oil: PB Blaster or Kroil.
Step-by-Step Removal
Step 1: Soak and PrepSpray the caps with penetrating oil every day for 3 days before starting. Patience is the most effective tool against saltwater corrosion.
Step 2: Apply Heat (The Secret Weapon)Aluminum expands faster than steel. You must heat the cylinder housing (the part holding the cap), not the cap itself.
Step 3: The "Shock" MethodInsert the pins of your MTT Pin Wrench fully. Apply a sharp, quick "snap" of force with a breaker bar to break the corrosion bond.
Step 4: Clean and ResealAfter removal, clean all threads with a wire brush. Apply marine grease to the threads of the new seals to prevent future seizing.
⚠️ Warning: Do NOT Use an Impact Gun!
Impact guns hammer the pins violently against the soft aluminum walls. Use a breaker bar and hand strength only.
