Looking to flex your creative muscles a little and have fun decorating your boat? Whether you’re participating in holiday events like boat parades or you just want to customize your boat’s everyday appearance, there are plenty of options to make it your own. Let’s look at five different ways to go about decorating your boat.
Before we get into the decorating ideas, however, there are a few things to keep in mind regarding safety.
For starters, consider the environment you’re bringing these decorations or furnishings into: they’re almost certainly going to get wet, and they’ll likely be exposed to other elements such as direct sunlight, wind, and sudden motion. With that in mind, you don’t want decorations that can be ruined by water or that can blow away easily (unless they’re well secured to the boat).
But you also need to consider the damage that could occur in the event of an accident: avoid materials that can shatter, cause a fire, or injure you or your passengers if they get knocked around by the movement of the boat.

Keeping the above safety considerations in mind, here are five ideas to help you decorate your boat for any occasion.
The types, colors, and number of lights you use on your boat can range from simple and classy to extravagant. Installing some extra mood lighting is a great way to make minimal changes to your boat’s appearance while adding a bit of warmth. If you’re preparing for a parade or want something more festive, consider using LED rope lights. Just make sure that whatever lighting options you choose are safe for marine use.
Your boat is a space that’s all your own. Why not customize it a little with a few choice decor items that make it feel more like home?
While you don’t want to overcrowd the space, think about bringing a few items onboard that would make it just a little more comfortable: cushions to sit on, blankets for when you get chilly, tableware, games (horseshoes, anyone?) — you get the idea. Of course, these will all need to be either waterproof or safe to get wet.
While it probably makes the most sense to decorate the interior of your boat, there may also be times when you want to spice up the exterior as well. While adhering to any safety regulations, colorful banners and fringes can be fun accessories for parties, parades, and other events. Or stick to something simple and mount a flagpole on the boat to let your colors fly.
While you may not want a ton of extra objects on board taking up space, color-coordinating the few items you do bring onto the boat will help give a more cohesive design overall. For example, you could pick a theme — like nautical motifs or your favorite sports team — or a basic color scheme, or a specific pattern like stripes, polka dots, or plaid.
Sometimes you may want to decorate your boat for a special occasion such as a party, boat parade, or holiday. In those cases, you may have a little more freedom to work with materials that aren’t durable enough for everyday use, or to use extra decorations that would pose an annoyance in the long run (think large inflatables or disposable party decorations).
However, some events have detailed guidelines for what types of decorations you can and can’t use, so be sure to read up on your event before you start piling on the decorations.
Decorating your boat is a great way to stretch your imagination and make your time out on the water even more comfortable. As you pick out decor and plan your boat’s aesthetic, just be sure to consider the environment around you to help ensure the safety of yourself, your fellow boaters, and the marine life we all love.
