01. Prep and Engine Oil Drain
Note: Always run the engine for a few minutes before draining to warm the oil.
- Warm the Engine: Connect water muffs and run briefly. Shut off and remove safety lanyard.
- Drain Oil: Remove oil drain screw. Use the Marine Tech Oil Drain Funnel to prevent spills.
- Replace Gasket: Install a brand new crush washer. Reinstall and torque to spec.
02. Oil Filter & Fuel System
- Remove Oil Filter: Use the Marine Tech Oil Filter Wrench for a non-slip removal.
- Install New Filter: Lubricate the gasket with oil. Hand-tighten, then apply an additional 3/4 turn.
- Replace Fuel Filter: Swap the external separator. Pre-fill with clean fuel to prevent air locks.
03. Lower Unit Gear Lube Change
Inspect for early signs of water intrusion to protect your lower unit.
- Drain: Remove lower screw first, then upper vent. Let oil drain completely.
- Inspect: Check magnetic tip for metal. Milky oil indicates water intrusion.
- Fill: Use the Transfer Pump to fill from the bottom up until lube exits the top hole.
Master Mechanic Tip: Seal Protection
Many Yamaha engines require a specialized wrench to access the trim/tilt unit for seal replacement. The Marine Tech Tools Yamaha Trim Wrench is engineered for a precise fit, preventing damage to the trim caps that standard tools cause.
