Gearcase Pressure/Vacuum Tester
About
Frequent changing of lower unit gear oil is critically important not because the gear oil degrades, its because this is your chance to catch water intrusion into your gear case. Most people simply drain the oil, check for water, then replace the oil with fresh. However, this tool provides you the opportunity to test the performance of the gear case seals.
The gear case seals on the drive and prop shafts are actually each comprised of two oil seals. One orientated to keep the oil in the gear case and the other oriented to keep the water out of the gear case. This tool will allow you to pull and hold both vacuum and pressure, testing for degradation of either seal in the set.
This is one of the rare cases where you can test for a problem before the symptoms of the problem present and in extreme cases, saving you a boat load of money in the process!
